Acupuncture is a treatment that uses very thin steel needles inserted into the skin to stimulate specific points in the body. The goal is to relieve a health condition or symptom, such as pain. The practice comes from traditional Chinese medicine. Scientific studies have confirmed its effectiveness for some conditions. My recent research has also qualified this effect.
It is thought to work by stimulating the release of endorphins, the body's natural pain-relieving chemicals.. It also has an influence on the autonomic nervous system which controls bodily functions.
Auricular acupuncture is the stimulation of acupuncture points on the external ear surface for the diagnosis and treatment of health conditions in another area of the body.
Following a randomised controlled study I ran on a group of medical and veterinary students, using auricular acupuncture I was delighted it showed a significant reduction in waist circumference among the group.

As well as using needles, one can also use tiny seeds that look like little beads or jewels placed on various points around the ear. This is called acupressure .
Acupuncture has been shown in scientific research to help alleviate several types of pain, including pain from menstrual cramps, pain from passing a gallstone, knee pain, facial pain, headache, sciatica, neck pain, jaw or dental pain, postoperative pain, kidney pain, tennis elbow and several types of intestinal pain conditions. It is thought to work by stimulating the release of endorphins, the body's natural pain-relieving chemicals. It is also said to influence the autonomic nervous system (which controls bodily functions) and the release of chemicals that regulate blood flow and pressure, reduce inflammation, and calm the brain.
Acupuncture helps with stress relief by activating the parasympathetic nervous system. This is the part of the nervous system that counteracts the fight-or-flight response, and it helps to promote feelings of calm, rest, and relaxation. Digestion is improved, and blood pressure decreases.

Acupuncture is believed to decrease the positive and negative reinforcements of addiction and therefore reduce drug use. Acupuncture treatments are thought to reduce the positive reinforcement properties of drugs by decreasing the amount of dopamine released when the drug is used. My recent research study was able to demonstrate this in regard to cravings and addiction to foods.
